Album Launch Event: Dxtr & Nikki Giovanni

4 weeks out, Nikki's legacy, and why we’re taking healing on the road

Hey Fam,

Sept 2nd, We are launching the inaugural tour event for our Album, Drowning In the Open. Tickets Here

Every day, it can feel like the world asks us to suit up. We put on armor before we walk out the door to handle the noise, the pressure, the expectations, and the weight of just holding it all together. But what happens when you’ve been wearing armor for so long that you forget who you are or can’t keep up with the pressure?

That’s why Drowning in the Open was born.

When Dr. Nikki Giovanni and I collaborated on this spoken-word project, it wasn’t just about putting words together, it was about creating a sanctuary. A place where vulnerability isn’t a liability, but a form of power.

On Wednesday, September 2nd, we are gathering at 1821 W Hubbard St in Chicago for something deeper than a standard show.

This evening is a kick-off and a fundraiser to take this multi-sensory experience and mental health advocacy across the country on a national tour.

Here is what we’re building together on Sept 2:

  • The “Room For Light” Exhibition: A walk-through gallery of glowing, lightboxes with integrated audio stories bringing hidden narratives into the light.

  • A Legacy Tribute: Honoring the late, legendary Dr. Nikki Giovanni and her lifetime of community care.

  • Unfiltered Dialogue: A real, unscripted community panel discussion centered on vulnerability, men’s mental health, and collective joy.

  • Live Performance: Raw, soul-stirring spoken word from myself & some incredible friends

If you’ve been feeling heavy, isolated, or just hungry for real human connection—this space was built specifically for you.

Leave the armor at the door. See you inside

With love and gratitude,

Dxtr

A life raft isn't built by the person drowning. We need community. We need Life Guards.
