my life’s work releases soon…

Drowning In The Open: A Final Letter To Our Brothers

Dxtr Spits & Kwame Alexander

It's crazy that this year is coming to an end. I’ve had buried myself away working on something that is actually a culmination of my life’s work. I once asked Kwame Alexander how long it took him to write “The Crossover”, he said about 7 years. At the time it felt like that was a crazy response, but now….I get it.

The Spoken Word Album the change how we approach men’s mental health.

January 23rd, I’ll be releasing a spoken word album with my late great mentor Dr. Nikki Giovanni called “Drowning In The Open: A Final Letter To Our Brothers”.

The album uses my own life stories from drowning with mental health struggles, to getting to a point of thriving and helping other men swim with me.  In Nikki Giovanni’s final recorded work, she left a potent letter to men, “your wellbeing matters too”, while providing a voice of wisdom and understanding. She was such a monumental part of my growth as a person and artist, and although I’m deeply saddened that she is not here in the physical, I am honored to share this work, as it was special to us both.

This work I now realize took me my entire life to write, without exaggeration. It goes back to early childhood traumas, adolescent wounds, and adulthood challenges along with the added conditioning of manhood and masculinity expectations. Even with all that adversity, still finding a way to choose towards breaking cycles, embracing vulnerability, and finding purpose.

My hope is that this album revolutionizes how we speak about men’s mental health by allowing men to feel heard and also giving the world the context of the complexity of men’s mental wellness journeys.

This album is beyond my or Nikki’s stories, this is about how we can continue the conversation about community wellness; one man, one human, one moment at a time.
